Julia Paul is a lecturer in the practice of broadcasting in the School of Arts, English and Languages at Queen's University, Belfast. She has been a journalist for more than 20 years.

Before becoming an academic she reported for the BBC, most recently covering politics in Northern Ireland. Her PhD research focuses on how that work helped explain post-conflict devolution in Northern Ireland. Her career has also included training journalists and media development in countries emerging from conflict, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2013 Paul devised a project to link women writers in Northern Ireland with Afghan women. The Afghan Women Spread the Word project has trained Afghan women to produce interviews, poems and short stories about their experiences of conflict.
